چکیده

The objectives of this research program are 1) to characterize the structure of the river plumes and coastal currents in the western Adriatic Sea and their influence on sediment dispersal from Alpine and Appenine rivers; 2) to assess the relative contributions of Alpine and Apennine rivers to the clinoform development in the Adriatic, and to determine the delivery mechanisms of these different sources 3) to determine the mechanisms and rates of sediment resuspension and bottom-boundary-layer sediment transport in the western Adriatic; 4) to determine how bottom-boundary-layer processes influence the patterns of erosion and deposition in the western Adriatic Sea.

The abundance, distribution and speciation of mercury in waters and sediments of the Adriatic Sea – a review

This review focuses on mercury speciation in the Adriatic Sea, a marginal sea of the Mediterranean, which represents its distinct biogeochemical subunit due to anthropogenic mercury loadings. The current knowledge about mercury cycling in the Adriatic is presented through an overview of the state of the art of research in this area: temporal and spatial distributions and occurrence of mercury s...

Sea-level change and deep sea sequence stratigraphy: A Middle Jurassic siliciclastic strata (Kashafrud Formation), NE Iran

The Upper Bajocian- Lower Bathonian succession in the Kopet-Dagh Basin of NE Iran represents fluvio-deltaic to turbidite deposits. The Kashafrud Formation provides an excellent opportunity to study the interplay between deep-water sedimentation and syndepositional tectonic subsidence (or uplift) in the region. The effects of these processes caused sea-level changes, variation in depositional se...

Biostratigraphy of Acritarchs and Chitinozoans in Ordovician Strata from the Fazel Abad Area, Southeastern Caspian Sea, Alborz Mountains, Northern Iran: Stratigraphic Implications

Sixty-four surface samples from the Lower Palaeozoic rock units (mainly Lalun,Abastu and Abarsaj formations) near Kholin-Darreh village in the Fazel Abad area, southeastern the Caspian Sea, Northern Iran, were analyzed to determine their agerelationships. The samples of Lalun Formation were barren, but those of Abastu andAbarsaj formations contained well-preserved and abundant palynomorph entiti...

Estimation of sedimentation rate in the Middle and South Adriatic Sea using 137Cs.

(137)Cs activity concentrations were studied in the sediment profiles collected at five locations in the Middle and South Adriatic. In the sediment profiles collected from the South Adriatic Pit, the deepest part of the Adriatic Sea, two (137)Cs peaks were identified. The peak in the deeper layer was attributed to the period of intensive atmospheric nuclear weapon tests (early 1960s), and the o...
